Jami Floyd is an American journalist, legal and political analyst, and television and radio host. Her experience spans local, network, cable and syndicated television, broadcast radio and digital media. She is nationally and internationally regarded as an expert on law and politics, especially where they intersect. She reports and blogs on sports, culture and civil rights. For fun Jami likes to read Shakespeare (yes, that's fun, not homework) and get lost in Central Park. She lives in New York City with her husband, two children and a menagerie of animals.
On September 17, 2015 The New York Council for the Humanities announces Public Scholars, its latest statewide public engagement initiative. Over the next two years, the Council's Public Scholars will travel across New York delivering presentations that encourage both curiosity and collaborative, informal learning. Jami will serve as a Public Scholar from September 2015 to August 2017.
On June 1, 2015, Jami joined the WNYC newsroom as a reporter and host. In fall 2015, she will become the WNYC host of All Things Considered. Jami comes to WNYC as a legal analyst for the station since 2009, and frequent guest host of The Brian Lehrer Show and other programs. She brings to WNYC her unique voice and style as a New Yorker. Jami was born in New York City, grew up on the Lower East Side and did her undergraduate work at SUNY Binghamton, where she was a DJ at WHRW. Jami will have a presence across all of WNYC's platforms, from radio and podcasting to social media and live events.
In 2015, Jami served on the panel of judges that selected the Innocence Network Journalism Award winners for the 2014 calendar year.
The Innocence Network Journalism Award was created to honor investigative reporting that brings to life the process of identifying and exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals. Every year it is an honor for Jami to serve on the awards panel.
In consultation with WNYC, Jami helped produce this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration with "Hear Our Voices, Count Our Votes: MLK's March Continues," presented as part of the Apollo's Uptown Hall series.
Award-winning host Brian Lehrer and MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry convened a discussion that looked at how - 50 years after the passage of the historic Voting Rights Act - communities across America continue to grapple with voter disenfranchisement, suppression, strained police-community relations, discrimination and other challenges to full equality.
